Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I knew Gordon, and he was a powerfully nice guy: what caused his death was his road racer's instinct to correct a slide: At Indy, you *never* correct a slide. Not that my meagre racing budget ever allowed me to even entertain the thought of doing Indy, but, had it, I seriously doubt I would have, because, like Gordon, my basic road racing instinct is to correct a slide. I'd die the same way!

Before Lyn St. James drove at Indy, she trained herself to react instinctively at turning left and not correcting a slide in the usual way. Nelson Piquet did not do this. Some have gotten away with it, Nigel Mansell and Danica Patrick come to mind.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
my impression of nelson's was that he chose to come into the pits too late, then backed off and turned to the left too abruptly :) not indy, but montoya was awesome at fontana years ago. slight drizzle and he is grabbing opposite lock at 300+ |

Hurtubise and Liguori bail out as Kenyon sits unconscious. No flames visible but note the intense heat haze top left.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I was there the day Piquet crashed. In turn four the "Snake Pit Annex" partying with the girls. We heard the skid and the crash but didn't actually see it because it went behind the bleachers. This has been posted before but is an amazing picture. His legs were totally pulverized. But he was put back together by Dr. Tramell and the Methodist Hospital team. They are some of the true heroes of racing in the modern era.

It almost looks like the tyre is cushioning his head. I felt very sad for nelson, he got thro a dangerous time in f1, already had money, and then got busted up terribly. Another Racer I guess. Real shame his career ended before he got to show his talent on the ovals. Another from 64, sos if a repost |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
i had seen the footage of my hero crashing at indy and some of the horrible images, but it was only recently i saw the above pic of nelson - while the pics and footage make me sad, this pic chills me so much more it is unbelievable to think his legs are in between his head and the wall. to me, it is more unbelievable to know he didn't suffer severe head injuries too while nelson's no doubt isn't an isolated case on the ovals, the word was that the track workers were physically sick when seeing his injuries. the pics of jeff andretti's car from the same year are similarly sickening i, for one was very relieved when nelson walked away from indy 93 without any more incidents |
