Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Funny how Piquet wasn't in the best of shape after the Caesars Palace GP in '81 when he threw up in his helmet during the race. Then in Brazil '82 he collapsed on the podium. My favorite story though is when he was at Methodist Hospital after his Indy crash and the doctors called for Mrs. Piquet and three different women showed up!

he was the last of the playboys - even edmund irvine was a boy scout compared to nelson my favourite story is when he allegedly climbed out of his brabham on pit straight during testing he wanted to see the look of horror on his mechanics face as it went by empty - it seems he escaped with some minor cuts and bruises |

Ronnie Duman is helped away from the Sachs MacDonald crash suffering from burns to his upper body, guess his overalls got the tears in the left leg as he exited his car?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I was sitting in the front row of the Paddock penthouse just past the starting line. We set in seats owned by the guy who gave the 500 winners ring Thorton Bardach. Duman's car was up the track from the main crash and fire. We did not see him get out however his car was burning fiercely and nobody was paying any attention to it so we figured the driver must have gotten out. All attention of course was to the main Holocaust back down the track.

Was just watching Alvins excellent vid capture, it's that Duman in the pink and black roadster getting spun backwards into the inside wall? Looks like a hard hit, lucky not to be knocked out long enough to burn fatally. What an epic moment of 500 history to witness first hand, were you above the pits some where about here? |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Yes it is and I was front row of the upper deck about at the far left of the photo or a little to the left of that just beyond the starting line. We thought probably several drivers were dead, so as bad as it was it was actually a bit of a relief it was only two. We were checking off the drivers in the newspaper trying to figure out who was in the fireball as they walked back to the pits or were interviewed. Finally after about 20 minutes suddenly my mother said loudly… "It's Eddie. It has to be Eddie. He would have been on the microphone by now calming the crowd." At that point literally everybody around us broke out crying and sobbing. That was the point long before the announcement that we knew.

Howdy Holmes and Gary Bettenhausen at the Michigan 500 in '84. I remember seeing a highlights package on UK tv and this crash wasn't shown. I think the massive Pancho Carter and Ganassi/Unser wrecks occurred in the same race?
