Bad news from the Nurburgring as a car in the VLN endurance series flipped coming over the crest at Flugplatz (Flying Place or something like that - I'm not kidding) and went over the barriers & into the crowd.

Latest news is at least 1 fatality and several injuries, the driver seems to be ok. He, the driver, was Jann Mardenborough is mostly famous for winning a competition on the Playstation and getting a full-time drive because of it.

Grainy footage uploading on You-Tube - haven't linked because better and more varied footage will come up shortly. If you're thinking, I've seen & heard of a crash there before, you can visit You-Tube and google Manfred Winklehock - Nurburgring and see how things were done in 1980.

Manfred of course died in a Porsche deathtrap in Mosport in 1985 just a few weeks before his talented countryman Stefan Bellof fell foul of Eau Rouge at Spa in a similar car.

Interestingly Bellof had a very similar accident to Manfreds at the 'ring in his 956 shortly before his death at Spa although I think it was at a different corner?

Fortythree, This bellof crash is in the Pflanzegarden section of the track. This accident happened in 83-84 the last time Group C ran the old circuit. This was also the weekend he set the fastes lap time ever at the ring. Coming up on the 30 years since his crash at Spa.

The number of motor racing fatalities or serious accidents is almost limitless. The Effort of posters in this thread has been fantastic.

New F1 Technical rules (or a draft of) for 2016 has been posted on FIA website. They include prolonged cockpit side panels around drivers head, and sizable (five-fold IIRC) increase in the static test load for the cockpit side crash/static testing. I'd say these are partially to improve things after Bianchi's crash. No pictures still of the left side of Bianchi's car....
