Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Some more images of the first lap crash at Indy 1966 taking out 11 of the 33 starters just after the green flag. Graham Hill would go on to win the race from Jimmy Clark who spun twice during the race. Only seven cars were running at the finish.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Günter Klass crashed fatally on Saturday 22nd July 1967 on the then 66km long road course Circuito del Mugello during practice. The Ferrari Dino 206SP left the road on the downhill section from Giogo Pass to Firenzuola and burst into flames when it hit a tree on the driver's side. Klass was trapped behind the steering wheel and suffered fatal chest and internal injuries. He was dragged from the wreck but his injuries must have been terrible.
Original post from page 122.

The first photo is a new post, it shows the terrible force of the crash and that Klass had no chance of survival....

The Ludovico Scarfiotti/Gerhard Mitter Porsche 907 crashing out during the Targa Florio 1968.

Scarfiotti would lose his life in June of '68 in a hillclimb crash and Mitter during the German GP in 1969.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Top German driver Gerhard Mitter's fatal crash at the Nurburgring in 1969 during the Grand Prix but in the F2 car section. It is believed that the BMW 269-4 lost a wheel during practice and the car left the curcuit at high speed.

Gerhard took part in seven GP's four in GP cars and three in F2 cars. He finished 4th at the German GP in 1963 and drove for Porsche in Sportcars winning the Austrian GP in 1966 and the Targa Florio in '69. He was also the European Hillclimb Champion three times between 1966 to 1968.
Original post from page 117.

This the same photo of Gerhard Mitter's fatal crash but has not been cropped like the previous one, showing more of the left hand side of the image.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

There is very little coverage of Ricardo Rodriguez fatal crash in practise for the non-championship F1 race in Mexico in 1962 but I've found a couple of photos.

Ricardo was the younger of the two racing Rodriguez brothers and was only 19 when he was invited to drive for the Ferrari team at the Italian GP in 1961 and he amazingly put it on the front row in his first GP.

He drove another five raced for Ferrari in 1962 but as the team did not send a car to the non-championship Mexican race he picked up a drive with the Rob Walker team.

He crashed heavily on the banking and died of multiple injuries.
Original post from page 33.

A newspaper article from the time including another photo of the wrecked Lotus 24.
The cars right rear suspension failed pitching Riccardo into the barriers at the fast Peraltada turn, inflicting fatal injuries.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Brazilian racer Fritz d'Orey's testing crash just prior to the 1960 Le Mans where he was very lucky not to wrap his Ferrari 250 GT SWB around a tree when he left the road and ended up in a field.

Fritz competed in three GP's in 1959 with a best result of 10th at the French GP in a Maserati 250F.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Duke Nalon's firey crash at the Indy 500 in 1949. The 'Iron Duke' had taken pole and was leading the race when his rear axle broke in the third turn and the car crashed and erupted in flames. Duke bailed out and suffered burns.

Duke led 32 laps at Indy over 1948 and '49 with a best finish of 3rd in 1948.
