F5000 crash on lap three of the Shellsport G8 Championship 1976 round at Mallory Park between Bill Gubelmann and Mike Wilds. Both walked away.

A few photos of the burnt out wreckage of Henri Toivonen's Lancia Delta S4 at the 1986 Corsican Rally that I haven't seen posted before. Henri and his co-driver, Sergio Cresto were leading the rally when the car left the road and crashed down a ravine, bursting into flames, neither stood any chance of survival. The above site is the one to go to for a massive selection of photos of Bill Vukovich's fatal crash, but I think this photo sums up the horror of the moment... Bill won the Indy 500 in 1953 and 1954 as well as two other races in the AAA Championship and was leading the 1955 race when he was involved in someone else's accident and lost his life. He had also led 150 laps of his second '500 in 1952 before being forced out with eight laps to go. He led an amazing 71% of laps at the Indy 500's that he competed in. Vukovich's Kurtis Kraft KK500C hit Johnny Boyd's car and was launched over a retaining wall landing upside down and on fire. Heroic Ed Elisian stopped his undamaged car and ran to Bill's assistance, but he was beyond any help at this stage.  ·  · |
