Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Original post from page 35. The first photo has been posted before but nowhere near this quality or size, it also shows John Surtees in his damaged Honda looking for Chris Amon. Amon slid off on oil on lap 9 at the Lesmo corner when in second place and went off backwards over the guardrail and into the trees. This caused Surtees to go off taking avoiding action crashing into the rail as well. |

An artists impression of the fatal impact between Tom Pryce and marshal Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren at the South African GP 1977.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Original post from page 72. The second photo is by far the best image of Rick Muther's Hawk getting close to turning over after colliding with David Hobbs at Indy 1971. Muther took part in 46 races over a period from 1967 to 1980, including three '500's with 13 top ten finishes and a best result of 5th twice, once in 1968 the other in 1972. Hobbs drove pretty much everything during his racing career taking 3rd place at Le Mans in 1969 and 1984, racing in six F1 races in the late '60's to mid '70's, F5000 Champion, Trans Am Champion, four Indy 500 starts with a best result of 5th in 1974. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I remember that day like it was yesterday. Such a tragic accident. Keeping with openwheel crashes, I remember a few years ago I was trying to research the Paul Warwick accident when I came across some photos of that fateful day at Oulton Park in 1991. There was a photo of the rescue helicopter taking Paul to hospital, and there were some aftermath photos as well, one of them in particular looked to be taken from another helicopter of the remains of Paul's car, the rear half smoking from the fire, the right rear was still attached, but not much else. You could still make out the sponsor, Mobil One on the engine cover and It looks like either a marshall or another driver standing near the crash. I'm pretty sure the photo was in black and white, but I am having trouble finding it, or any other photo of his crash since. Anyone have any more info on this? Great site by the way!! |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Hi Coolmike. This thread does contain a photo of Paul going into a medical helicopter, use the search facility to view. Any racing fatality is of course tragic but i'm sure all racing fans have ones that feel particularly personal and one of those for me was the loss of Paul Warwick. I'm a huge fan of his older brother Derek and keenly followed Paul's career, always impressed at how even with his F1 commitments Derek was there supporting his brother whenever he could. After Paul's career had seemingly stalled in F3 racing it was a pleasure to see him dominate the British F3000 Championship and Derek's clear pride in his achievements. I've never seen the car after the crash but contemporary reports paint a pretty hellish picture. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Paul was definately a real talent wasted. I had followed Derrek through F1 to a point, as I did most drivers. But, I hadn't learned about Paul's accident until I recieved an AutoSport magazine in 1991. In that issue, there was a tribute to Paul, and information on his accident. Witnesses say they saw a wheel off the ground, presumably the right front, before he went off at Knickerbrooke. There were a lot of witnesses to the accident, and I heard there is even amatuer footage of it as well, but that footage might have been confiscated. I wonder if Paul's car had even attempted to make the corner, or if it just went straight on when he arrived there. The only crash besides Martin Donnely's crash at Jerez that sounded similar to Pauls might be Gille's crash in 1982. The fact that Paul was actually thrown from the car, or what was left of it makes his crash stick in my head, as the impact must have been huge. I guess my curiosity gets the better of me when it comes to an accident like his, and maybe Marcel Albers due to the fact that worse accidents have been better documented and/or filmed. p.s Great site by the way! |
