She actually left Honduras and moved to Mexico to live with her boyfriend. That's frequently considered an upward move, but I have a feeling that the situation she landed in was lateral at best.

When you flee the poverty and misery of your childhood to find a better life elsewhere and it turns out to be much the same...it becomes quite apparent how one's options can seem (and in many cases actually be) utterly hopeless.

Article said she was about 5-7 weeks pregnant. Possible that was the reason for the suicide, but in a third world country with weak pre-natal care and the condition of the 'apartment' she lived in, I'd honestly be surprised if she even knew about such an early pregnancy.
