Anything other than the act itself is a pretty sizable step from the act. It’s easy to go thinking the worst of anyone whose interests seem out of the ordinary to us, but most weirdos are just weird, not dangerous. I’ve seen plenty of neighbors going “We’re really shocked, s/he seemed like a normal, decent person”, and not a whole lot of “We’ve all just been waiting for this for years now, didja know s/he covered his/her living room in DR and Rule 34 printouts? Such a freak!” going on. Throw in a correction for the percentage of the population that are that kind of weird, the odds are stacked way in favor of perps being normal.
