Re: Dying To Fix A Tire

But, I mean it seems like that type of explosion couldn't actually be any more pressurized than normal air-pumping, right?

It doesn't look like there was any heat/fire in the equation, AND there would still need to be something metal, or harder than tire rubber to blow skulls apart.

It's the volume of air, 100lb air pressure (volume wise) big truck tire vs same pressure in say a bicycle tire.
1950's-1970's commercial trucks and some heavy duty pickups had split ring rims. The split rings were known to fly off during tire changing & airing up a totally flat tire. A lot of fatals/injuries.
Nowadays, truck rims are safer but even so, if truck tires are not caged or secured during the air up, with that much volume, the tire itself pops over the rim bead and the wheel and all can get launched as air escapes. Or the rubber tire gives way somewhere with the same result.
A lot of vids on the net of exploding truck tires.

Note to self: When getting big tires changed, do not stick around to chat with the fella fixin' the tires. Just trust that he will do a good job, from far FAR away.

Re: Dying To Fix A Tire

What the Christ?!?

I know those tire explosions can do serious damage, BUT...

I want to know which part of the tire becomes the lethal projectile...

It's also curious to note that in all the tire blowout deaths, the skulls explode while the bodies are seemingly untouched.

I'll look it up
there is a metal ring ... that does the head popping

This is a well known danger with split rims.
