FYI: the book "Into Thin Air" by John KraKauer, is a personal account of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster. i found it fascinating. read it if you are interested in this topic. :~)

There's also a documentary on that fateful climb. Scares the crap out of you. To think people got stuck up there, at around 27k-ft, in the midst of a raging blizzard, with temps below zero and winds +hurricane. Miserable way to die. And the people that did perish did so in a slow, agonizing way. They played the actual recording of the guide, who spoke his last words while being stranded in the ice and snow, at 27,000 ft, in total darkness, with gales howing.
