damn i never even been to Oz and even I know that rying to travel the desert with no means of communication and little water is suicide.....were they aussies?? surely not.
Yeah stupidly they were Aussie's.
To mack this even worse is they wondered around searching for a bore hole, so water BUT they headed in the wrong direction. If they had just walked 90 metres in the opposite direction they would have had water!

We get taught to filter radiator water or windscrean wipper water and drink that.
