I don't believe there to be a connection, other than the coincidence of the last names. It is always possible, of course, but doubtful in this case. The surname is fairly common in Mexico and none of the reports of either Marrufo mention the other in any context.

Further, the Juarez-based reporter whom I spoke with regarding this case told me that Janeth was murdered as a warning to her boyfriend who had Cartel ties. This was an unofficial statement from the reporter and totally unsubstantiated, but she seemed pretty certain of that motive being behind the killing.

Good catch regardless, though. I'd have certainly been inclined to suspect a possible connection if I hadn't personally received other information from a media rep.

Interesting update to this case, in case anyone is still reading this thread or cares at all.

This young lady's mother (aged 41) was found last week strangled to death inside an abandoned car, less than a mile away from where her daughter was found 13 months earlier.

Probably true. Though while reading a recent article about the one year anniversary of the mother's death (2 year anniversary for the daughter's), it was mentioned that her father was highly placed on some anti-crime task force in Mexico City. So while the younger girl's murder was conclusively linked to a Cartel boyfriend, the mother's may have had something to do with her father's connections.
