I have covered this in greater detail elsewhere, as have several others. I'll summarize in brief, though, since you asked.

Involuntary urination is not at all uncommon in many types of violent death. When the body dies, especially very suddenly and traumatically, the lack of nervous system control can result in sphincters loosening and voiding their contents. So to start with, it can happen any time someone dies, especially violently.

For various reasons, the odds of it happening are significantly higher with asphyxiation deaths such as hanging and strangulation. Further still much more likely for females than males, due to the structure of the anatomy. The process of asphyxiation brings with it a lot of struggle internally. Even if the brain loses consciousness early in the process (usually within a minute at most), the body still struggles and fights to survive. This process often includes emptying the bladder and/or bowels.

A comment on the wording of your question, however...it actually tends to happen during the hanging rather than 'after it' in many cases. Having spoken with (or read testimony from) survivors of hanging suicide attempts and survivors of near lethal strangulation, they have consistently stated that wetting or soiling their pants was the last thing they remember before losing consciousness. Some blacked out before it happened, but the majority vaguely knew it was happening right before blacking out from asphyxiation.

Okay, so maybe not so brief. The gist of it is, if you're going to hang yourself, you are almost certainly (about 85% of the time if female, closer to 60% if male) going to wet your pants and there's about a 50% chance that you're going to drop a deuce while you're choking out, as well. We just don't usually see the defecation on this site because it is hard to see through clothes. The autopsy reports frequently mention it, however.

Believe it or not, the question is actually answered more thoroughly by myself and several other members in the Hanging threads here. I have a few published forensics studies about the specific issue, but I don't have them handy atm.

Cases like this are heartbreaking. I failed Higher Grade Biology (Scottish version of England's A-Levels) and although I was gutted and sheepishly told parents, I simply re-sat it at night school.

Suicide simply did not enter my psyche.

I understand Asian and Arab kids can be put under enormous pressure by their parents to do REALLY well so if they fail, they'll probably be terrified

Case in point...several of the news blogs and sites in Cambodia who reported on this incident included a variation of the following line:

"Students, please remember! To avoid these tragic circumstances for yourself, study harder for your exams!"
