Extreme. Couldn't she just re-sit the exam? Very saddening to think she must've felt she had no other options.

I think she'd shot her wad, financially speaking. I don't recall the particulars at this point, but I believe she'd borrowed a lot of money from family just to go to school and afford to take the test. All of her peers succeeded and she missed by a very slight margin, but it was enough. I suspect that she simply could not afford to re-take the class and was feeling intense guilt, shame, and social pressure from her failure. Still not a valid reason to strangle yourself to death, imo, but I have no first-hand cultural perspective to gauge how severe an impact this failure had on her life and that of her family, so I try not to judge.  |
