California's most infamous cold case serial murderer is still the topic of documentaries, TV movies, and hundreds of YouTube posts. You'll see an occasional archive photo of a crime scene but I decided to put all I could find into a thread. I've also included some photos found of the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, believed to be another victim claimed by the Zodiac.

VALLEJO, (July 4, 1969) — Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin (22) and Michael Renault Mageau (19) were shot around midnight between July 4 and 5, in the parking lot of Blue Rock Springs Park Golf Course. Mageau survived the attack; Ferrin was pronounced dead at Kaiser Foundation Hospital.

NAPA COUNTY, (September 27, 1969) — Cecelia Ann Shepard (22) and Bryan Calvin Hartnell (20) were stabbed at Lake Berryessa. Hartnell survived, but Shepard died at Queen of the Valley Hospital as a result of her injuries on September 29.

SAN FRANCISCO, (October 11, 1969) — Paul Lee Stine (29) was shot and killed in the Presidio Heights neighborhood while driving a taxi.

RIVERSIDE, (October 30, 1966) — Cheri Jo Bates, an 18-year-old student at Riverside City College (RCC), spent the evening at the campus library annex until it closed at 9:00 p.m. Neighbors reported hearing a scream around 10:30. Her father reported her missing, and she was found dead the next morning at 6:30 a.m. She was found a short distance from the library, between two abandoned houses slated to be demolished for campus renovations.

Great post love vintage Serial Killers, the detectives really had their work cut out for them back then in the early days of forensics.

Many of the most prolific would have gotten absolutely nowhere near their tallies in the modern climate.

I graduated the RN program in 2019 and I used to feel weird in the library at RCC. Very weird feeling walking to the car, but I'm a scared cat. I don't know why I torture myself. Thanks for the post.

Wasn't a huge favorite of mine, but I guess if you were around when he was active i think he instilled a lot of fear in the public, plus the cyphers and the taunts I guess that stuff carried him a long way also never was caught always adds a bit of flair.

But for me he had finished killing before i was born and he was another country I only heard about him when i started buying serial killer books.

That's a fair point. I kinda see him like btk with the whole taunting the law thing.
Perhaps if he was active when I was alive I'd be more interested in deff something I agree with
