Re: Bodies Recovered from Capsized Fishing Boat
I moderate a Piranha web site and yeah they did do it. What happened was buddy was on a cable mini barge laying cable line across the Xingu or the Amazon. It works on a counter balance system using the two cables as balance and flotation. One of the cables snapped and flipped it over and submerged the control area which is like a operator box on a loader or cat. From what I gather he smashed out the window with his hand and was somehow trapped in the window trying to get out. If you know the nature of these fish they don't attack random or healthy targets often. But the combination of blood and a panic state and hence movement in the water attrack them rather quickly. The fish that you see have been pulled from his chest cavity as they will start to feed on exposed flesh but would not and will not chew through material to get to it. They used a tug to flip it over in approx. 5 minutes but by that time it was too late. As well the armor catfish you see on the table only follows a shoal of piranha when they eat as it picks out of the water floating bits of debris after them. So unless the person staging it knew enough about piranha behavior as well as habitat behavior I strongly doubt it. If you have ever seen a shoal of Pygos go after something it takes mere seconds for the attraction in the right conditions as well as they work rather effective as a group to consume a lot in little time. I feel for the poor fucker that had to die like this cause it would be a bit before you passed out due to pain. That is what we figured on the site and one of our sponsers that was down in S.A collecting at the time also concurred that it was a piranha attack. Just my two bits anyway and for you all to know. |
