A favela is the term for a shanty town in Brazil, most often within urban areas.

I recommend two movies, City of God about a young man growing up in the favelas, and Elite Squad (Tropa De Elite), about the special police unit the BOPE. The gangs in those favelas makes the Bloods and the Crips look like a bunch of junior leaguers.
