In Rio de Janeiro (been there twice) shanties are all around the city. My gf's parents lived in the back of Copacabana, a neighborhood of Rio. our neighborhood was up against a mountain, one which was covered entirely by a favela. At night you could hear the occasional gunshot coming from there, although dealers also will light up firecrackers regularly throughout the night to alert other dealers to the arrival of police or competing dealers. An important part of Brazil's urbanization policy is to help modernize and build up the favelas in order to integrate them with the city, a challenge, sometimes, as class politics are alive and well in that country. The upper class wants nothing to do with the lower classes and the poor. The best warehouse parties are in the favelas, just need to know which favela to go to. Go to a party in Rocinha favela, you will have a rowdy ol' time. Go to one in Vigario Geral, you will end up on DR :) that said, there is a micro-industry built up around favela sightseeing.. tour operators guide small buses through to the friendlier favela neighborhoods. |
