On May 29, 2025, shortly after 1:00 a.m., Woodbridge officers were sent to a residence on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township. Multiple 911 callers reported an assault with injuries involving a male later identified as Aamir Allen, 35, of Carteret, who had a baseball bat.

Officers encountered Allen carrying the bat while walking in the roadway. They repeatedly ordered him to drop it. Allen did not drop the bat and walked away while officers followed from a distance.

Allen stopped outside a closed convenience store in Port Reading and stood holding the bat as officers continued giving commands. After a radio transmission reported that Allen had struck occupied cars with the bat, Woodbridge Police Sergeant Marco Bruno arrived, got out of his vehicle, gave several commands for Allen to drop the bat, and fired six shots.

Allen was struck and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at about 1:40 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m.

A state grand jury later indicted Sergeant Marco Bruno on a first-degree aggravated manslaughter charge.
