Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on May 29, 2025, Woodbridge police officers were dispatched to a residence on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township after multiple 911 calls.

The callers reported an assault with injuries during an incident involving a male, later identified as Aamir Allen, 35, who had a baseball bat.

Responding officers found Mr. Allen walking in the roadway while carrying the bat. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop it. He did not drop the bat and began walking away as officers followed from a distance. He later stopped outside a closed convenience store in Port Reading while still holding the bat.

After a police radio transmission reported that Mr. Allen had struck occupied cars with the bat, Woodbridge Police Sergeant Marco Bruno arrived. He got out of his vehicle, gave several commands for Mr. Allen to drop the bat, and fired six shots from his service weapon.

Mr. Allen was wounded and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at about 1:40 a.m. He was pronounced deceased at 9:21 a.m.

A state grand jury later indicted Sergeant Marco Bruno on a first-degree aggravated manslaughter charge.
