On April 17, 2024, at about 2:20 p.m., a plainclothes off-duty Tucson Police Department officer was at an apartment complex at 4601 East Skyline Drive near North Swan Road when he heard sounds of distress outside and calls for help. He had an acquaintance call 911 and went outside to check.

A short time earlier, a 38-year-old man had called 911 from the same complex to report a burglary in progress. During the call, he said people were trying to kill him, made several unusual statements, and said he had a knife. The dispatcher changed the call to a welfare check and told him to put the knife away.

The off-duty officer saw a woman walking her dog and speaking with a man through a closed apartment window. The officer saw the man inside holding a knife, moved the woman to a safer location, and identified himself as a police officer.

The man then came out of the apartment holding two knives and advanced toward the off-duty officer. The officer fired and struck him. A Pima County Sheriff's Department deputy had just arrived for the 911 call, heard the gunshot, and found the man, the off-duty officer, and the woman with her dog.

The off-duty officer identified himself and followed the deputy's directions while they waited for more deputies. Deputies began aid when a second deputy arrived. Rural Metro Fire personnel treated the man and took him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No officers or other community members were injured. Detectives charged the man with aggravated assault, and he was petitioned for a mental health evaluation while recovering in the hospital. The off-duty officer who fired was identified as Lead Police Officer Noah Wade, a five-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.
