Wednesday, September 10, 2008 AIKEN — Authorities say a former Aiken County Sheriff's deputy is charged with assaulting an 18-year-old he was arresting.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office said 40-year-old Jeffrey Nation of Aiken was arrested Tuesday, two days after he hit a New Ellenton teenager. Nation was charged with assault and battery and misconduct in office.
Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Michael Frank said Nation was no longer an officer as of Tuesday morning.
Assault charges against the teen were dismissed. A statement from the sheriff's office said Nation falsely accused the teen of trying to head-butt him.
Sheriff Michael Hunt said he asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement to investigate, and he apologized to the teen for unacceptable behavior by an officer.
Former Deputy Jeff Nation is currently under the microscope of state agents who were called in by Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt after the deputy arrested Lorenzo Williams Jr., 18, of Richmond Circle in New Ellenton, claiming the 18-year-old tried to head butt him when he stopped him walking in the area of Green and Jackson streets.
The in-car police video was pulled and used to fire Nation Tuesday and drop all charges against the 18-year-old.
The video shows the incident unfolded early Sunday evening when Nation called to Williams from his patrol car loud speaker, telling the teen to pull up his pants. Rather than doing that, the teen pulled his shirt down to cover his exposed underwear and laughed.
Nation can be heard saying that if he sees the teen's underwear, he is going to jail for disorderly conduct. Then he ordered Williams to put his hands on the hood of the patrol car so the in-car camera will video him during the questioning.
"If you want to do something stupid, you may wind up on TV," Nation told Williams as he stood with his hands on the hood of the car. Nation then told him to look him in the eye. As the teen turned his head, Nation pushed him down, hit him in the throat and then arrested him, claiming he tried to head butt him.
Nation put Williams in the back of the patrol car and then began to drive him to the detention center. The deputy continued to belittle the man, telling the teen he arrested him because he was on "thug patrol."
Williams has no criminal history.
As the deputy neared the jail, Williams again told him he doesn't have a criminal history.
Nation told him that he will.
In 2004, Nation was suspended from the sheriff's office for a use-of-force incident, and the day before Sunday's assault, he was involved in an incident on Cedar Road, assisting Aiken EMS with a 51-year-old Windsor man who had been threatening to kill himself. During that incident, the victim, who was armed with a knife, was injured, according the incident report.
By the deputy's own admission, he struck the man on the top of the head with a Maglite flashlight. However, he explained in his report that he had attempted to knock the knife from the man's hand, but "missed and struck him on the top of the head as he ducked downward." He went on to explain that he shoved the man to the ground, and the suspect then hit the steps with his shoulder and head.
The Windsor man was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
That case is also being investigated by state agents.
