On January 17, 2026, two suspects, one later identified as Muhammad Hussein, began a crime spree from Sacramento to San Jose and other jurisdictions. It started with the theft of a red Corvette from a Sacramento dealership, followed by armed robberies in San Mateo County and San Jose. The next day, more robberies happened in another city and in San Jose on Coleman Avenue.

On January 21, San Jose officers found the stolen Corvette after a license plate reader alert, pursued it briefly, lost it, and later found it unoccupied. At about 2:01 p.m., officers responded to a car dealership in the 900 block of Capitol Expressway, where Hussein brandished a handgun at an employee, stole a green Corvette, and fled.

SJPD helicopter Air3 found the stolen Corvette outside San Jose and tracked it into the Hollister area. Hollister officers and San Benito County deputies pursued it at low speed until it became disabled. Hussein exited with a handgun, an officer-involved shooting occurred, he fled, a second officer-involved shooting occurred, and he carjacked a white Honda at gunpoint before fleeing back toward San Jose.

Multiple agencies pursued Hussein at high speeds on the freeway. When he re-entered San Jose, San Jose officers took over the pursuit on city streets. At about 3:53 p.m., Hussein crashed into a stopped vehicle near Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue.

After the crash, Hussein exited and charged at an arriving San Jose police sergeant while firing multiple rounds. The sergeant was struck in the hand and head, fracturing his skull, and returned fire. Hussein tried to get into the sergeant's police vehicle, then ran on foot toward occupied vehicles while still armed.

Additional officers fired at Hussein as he ran. He fell and was then struck by a responding patrol vehicle. Video analysis determined the collision dislodged his 9mm pistol with a 33-round magazine into an embankment. Officers believed he was still armed while he moved on the ground, and more officers fired.

Hussein died at the scene. The sergeant was critically injured, taken to a hospital by patrol officers, treated, and later released. Three sergeants and six officers were involved in the use of force. The second suspect was arrested within 24 hours and has been charged with multiple robberies.
