A 68-year-old grandfather who was severely beaten on an East Village street Friday night died from his injuries the following day and police are looking for the suspect.

Ruan Wen Hui had just dropped off his granddaughter and was walking on East Sixth Street between avenues C and D when a suspect came up from behind, yelled at him and started attacking, officials said.

Surveillance video from the scene shows the suspect tossing the man against a wall, then stomping and punching him. After the attack, the assailant is seen walking away.

Hui was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. He died Saturday, police say.

Hui, a Chinese immigrant, worked in a garment factory for the last 15 years, his daughter said. She described him as a man who always tried to help others and said she didn't know why anyone would want to attack him.

"Everybody loves him," she said. "Nobody can accept that he is gone."

A woman who lives on the block saw Hui lying in the street after he was assaulted.

"He was laying there, and he was bleeding, and the cops were here, and it was obvious that he was hurt pretty badly," the witness said.

Law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York that investigators have identified a suspect in the attack and are looking for him.

A suspect was charged Tuesday in the beating death of a 68-year-old man in the East Village.
Jamie Pugh, 20, was charged with second-degree murder, attempted robbery and assault in the attack last week, police said.
Ruan Wen Hui, 68, was walking on East 6th Street off Avenue D around 9 p.m. Friday when he was attacked, police said.

Stone-faced and in handcuffs, Pugh was escorted out of the 9th Police Precinct station Tuesday night. He was expected to appear for an arraignment Wednesday morning.

Pugh, who lives in the public housing development a block away from the beating, was taken into custody early Tuesday.


The motive for the attack is believed to be an attempted robbery, sources said.

Hui was a married father of three grown daughters. They said their father, a Chinese immigrant, spoke no English.
