Police Shoot And Kill Armed Woman At Albuquerque Hotel

Newly released video shows the frantic moments police said a woman in mental crisis shot toward officers. Before they shot and killed her outside an east downtown hotel. The shooting happened in the Hotel Parq Central parking lot around 5 a.m. on June 17. Before that, police said the woman involved stole a gun from hotel security and opened fire.

When Albuquerque police first arrived outside Hotel Parq Central last month, they almost immediately heard gunshots after getting on scene of a call for trespassing. The woman at the center of it was 36-year-old Desiree Danielle Herrera, who hotel staff wanted off the property.

The Albquerque Police Department said Herrera was breaking computers and glass inside the hotel, and they believe she was in a mental crisis. Things quickly escalated when she took a gun from the hotel security guard, leading staff to call 911 again. Video showed Herrera charging outside and trying to break into an SUV, eventually firing a gun into the window. Within seconds, officers arrived, and Herrera went up to the hotel’s staircase and fired her gun.

APD said she fired eight shots over the next minute as police demanded she surrender, and they added that she then fired a round at a car near officers. That’s when officers fired back. Hererra died at the scene. APD Chief Harold Medina said just hours before the shooting, an officer arranged for paramedics to take her in for an evaluation.

Chief Medina said APD is still investigating the circumstances behind how Herrera got from the hospital, where she was getting a mental health evaluation, to the hotel where the shooting happened.

Albuquerque police said three officers fired their guns in the shooting. None of those officers had been involved in any prior shootings.

Mental health crisis, the new plague.

Desiree Danielle Herrera, 36, passed away on June 17, 2025 in Albuquerque, New Mexico Born on January 28, 1989, in the same city she called home throughout her life.

Desiree brought warmth and light to those around her with her loving spirit and generous heart. Desiree was known for her sweet nature, infectious laughter and deep consideration for others.

Her kindness touched many lives, and she carried a joyful presence that uplifted those fortunate enough to know her. She had a giving soul and heart full of compassion.

Her faith was a guiding force in her life. Legacy Church was her spiritual home, where she found strength and purpose.

Recently, she had begun serving in the water baptism ministry- a role she embraced with devotion and humility.

Desiree loved the Lord deeply, she spoke to him often and sought to serve him in all that she did.

Desiree leaves behind a large and loving family who will cherish her memory forever.
