Police Dogs Used on Rangers Fans in 2008 UEFA Cup Final Riots, Manchester
Public disorder broke out in Manchester city centre on May 14, 2008, as Rangers played Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final at the City of Manchester Stadium. Roughly 200,000 Rangers supporters traveled to Manchester, most without tickets. A large screen had been set up for fans in Piccadilly Gardens, but it went dark as the match kicked off at about 7:45 p.m. Disorder followed in the city centre and continued through the night. Greater Manchester Police deployed public-order officers and police dog units. Dog handlers used their dogs against supporters during the clashes. Police made 39 arrests for alleged offenses including wounding, public-order violations and drug offenses. Thirty-nine officers were injured, and one police dog was cut after stepping on broken glass. Ambulance crews attended 52 assault cases. In September 2010, 12 people were convicted of riot.
