Pima County Deputy Shoots Man Who Shot Deputy
On January 22, 2023, shortly before 5:30 p.m., the Pima County Sheriff's Department received several 911 calls about an adult male neighbor firing a gun outside a home in the 6400 block of W. Swan Falls Way. The man left in a black Chevrolet pickup before deputies arrived. Around 8:35 p.m., deputies went to W. Valencia Road and S. Camino Verde for a hit-and-run involving a pickup. Minutes later, more callers reported a brush fire caused by a black Chevrolet pickup with a damaged tire driving on a rim. Witnesses directed deputies to where the truck had last been seen. Deputies found the Chevrolet pickup pulling into a garage in the 6400 block of W. Swan Falls Way. As the first deputy got out of his marked patrol vehicle, the suspect in the garage fired and struck him in the leg. The wounded deputy could not return fire. A second deputy arrived as the suspect continued shooting, and the deputy fired back, striking the suspect. Drexel Heights Fire District personnel treated both men. The deputy was taken to a hospital and has since been released. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Ricardo Castro, was taken to a hospital and later booked into the Pima County Jail on two counts of attempted first-degree murder. The deputy who fired was identified as Deputy Christopher Campbell, a six-year veteran of the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Firearms were found near where Castro was detained.
