A 911 call reported smoke coming from a residence at 3:22 p.m. on October 19, 2024, in Pemberton Township, New Jersey. Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department members and Pemberton Township police officers responded to a home on Woodland Avenue in the Browns Mills section.

Responding officers received information that an individual with a firearm was in the backyard. The man was later identified as Marvin Taylor, 57, of Browns Mills.

Officers positioned themselves in a woods-lined area behind the backyard and gave commands for Taylor to drop the weapon. Taylor exchanged gunfire with Pemberton Township Police Officer Kyle McQueen, and Taylor was struck.

Officers rendered first aid. Taylor was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m. A firearm was recovered near Taylor after the shooting. No officers or other civilians were injured.
