Officer Fires Pepper Balls at Kaitlin Rust, Louisville, May 29, 2020
A Louisville police officer fired pepper balls at reporter Kaitlin Rust and photojournalist James Dobson during a live broadcast on May 29, 2020, hitting both journalists. The WAVE 3 News crew was reporting from 5th Street in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, during protests over the police killing of Breonna Taylor. The broadcast showed riot-equipped officers advancing along the street and Rust later holding a hand to her face. Rust said she was complying with an instruction to move when she was hit. Police reassigned the officer, later identified as Dustin Dean, pending an investigation. The department said officers had orders not to fire pepper balls at media. The FBI investigated for about three years and filed no criminal charges. An internal investigation sustained one violation of the department's chemical-agent use-of-force policy and cleared Dean of three other allegations. He received a written reprimand in November 2024.

The media has as much of a right to be there as the police. At least that's how it used to be in the USA, supposed, land of the free.
