Mark Thompson walked up behind Constable Hayden Edwards at Sydney Central Station at about 7 p.m. on April 19, 2019, and stabbed him once in the back with a hunting knife he had bought at a market earlier that day. Edwards, 30, was attending to a separate matter and had his back turned when Thompson attacked without warning.

The knife caused a 6-centimeter wound. Edwards underwent surgery overnight and was discharged from the hospital the following evening to recover at home. Other officers tasered Thompson, causing him to fall backward onto the tracks, and arrested him.

Thompson, who was 53 at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. On February 19, 2021, he was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison with a four-year non-parole period. The sentencing judge found that Thompson had chronic schizophrenia and that his motive was to provoke police into shooting him dead. The judge also found that the attack was random and that Edwards had no warning that would have allowed him to defend himself.

A man armed with a 45cm hunting knife pleaded guilty to plunging the blade into a police officer's back in a random attack at Sydney's Central Station despite being psychotic at the time, a court has heard.

Mark Thompson, 54, has pleaded guilty to the 2019 attack which was captured on CCTV and played for the NSW District Court on Friday.

The victim, Constable Hayden Edwards, can be seen in the footage immediately collapsing the ground after being stabbed - before managing to get to his knees with his gun drawn.

The court heard Thompson was on a mission to be killed by police to release his inner demons.

The officers instead tasered him - sending him toppling backwards onto train tracks.
