Man with Knife Tasered and Shot by Baltimore Cop
On Thursday, April 2, a Baltimore Police officer shot a 35-year-old man, Tavon Newton, in the 1700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue after Police responded to a fight between three people spotted on CCTV. Officers were told one man had a knife and after a foot chase, a struggle ensued over a satchel the man was carrying. An officer attempted to use a Taser twice, but it was ineffective. The man reportedly grabbed the officer’s Taser, at which point the officer fired one shot. The man was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Police later recovered a handgun from his bag and confirmed he had a knife. The family has publicly questioned why the officer fired while the man was on the ground. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that once released, Newton will be charged with aggravated assault (related to the initial fight) and resisting arrest. The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office has taken over the investigation into the shooting to ensure a thorough review of the officer's use of force. The involved officer has been placed on routine administrative leave, and the department's Public Integrity Bureau is conducting an internal review of the body-worn camera footage. Newton's sister, LaShawn Newton, and other witnesses have publicly disputed the police account. They state that video evidence shows him lying on his stomach and not posing a threat at the moment the officer fired. Mayor Brandon Scott has activated a Coordinated Neighborhood Stabilization Response in the Upton neighborhood to support residents affected by the trauma of the incident. |

Suddenly got a lil' less fighty, didn't he? In close quarters like that, with folks on top of you trying to keep you down (so to speak), face-up or face-down is irrelevant if you can still SOMEhow reach one of the weapons suddenly within grabbing distance. That shot probably prevented something far worse, for him and/or the cop(s).
