On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at about 4:12 p.m., Hayward Police Dispatch received a detailed witness report of a Hispanic adult male in his 30s armed with a handgun in the 29000 block of Mission Blvd in Hayward.

Hayward officers responded and found a suspect matching the description. Before officers could exit their vehicles, the suspect crouched behind a parked car and pointed a pistol at them.

Three Hayward officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire. No one was struck by gunfire. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Jaime Mejia Lopez, had a minor thumb injury and was medically cleared at a local hospital before being booked into jail.

Mejia Lopez was identified as an unhoused resident of Hayward. He was arrested on multiple charges, including three counts of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Hayward Police Internal Affairs is handling an administrative investigation, and the Homicide/Major Assaults Unit is handling a criminal investigation. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office was notified.
