SHELBY, N.C. -- Authorities are still searching for a man who escaped custody Monday night in Shelby. Police said Chavis Hargro should be considered dangerous.

Police said surveillance video showed Hargro was left alone in the magistrate's office. The Cleveland Headline News reports he simply got up, and walked out. Hargro was handcuffed, but not chained to the wall.

Shelby police said he was taken into custody around 8:15 p.m. Monday. Hargro was arrested for federal cocaine charges.

The Shelby Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshal Service, and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office were focusing their search on an area behind the law enforcement center, near Palmer Park in Shelby Tuesday morning.

Authorities said Hargro should be considered dangerous, but believe he is not armed.

Police told this is not the first time Hargro tried to escape from police custody. They said in 2000 while he was being booked at the same law enforcement center, Hargro took a gun from an officer’s holster and shot that officer in the leg.

Hargro was also arrested by Charlotte Mecklenburg police last November, and charged with resisting arrest, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, and driving while his license was revoked.
