VALPARAISO — Police believe that the 25-year-old man who fled from the Porter County Jail Monday morning may have left the area in a vehicle stolen from nearby Pratt Industries. An employee of the plant contacted police at 1:40 p.m. to report that his gray 2013 Ford Focus was stolen from the parking area, Porter County police said. The vehicle had a Michigan license plate with the identification of DFT1996, according to police. Police were checking with Pratt Industries for a surveillance video, but believed the theft was related to the escape. Michael Maldonado remained at large at 7:30 p.m. Monday and the missing vehicle had not been located, police said. Maldonado escaped at 11:15 a.m. from Portage police in the jail's sally port area, which is an enclosed area leading into the jail, according to police. "It is believed at this time Maldonado jumped from the passenger seat into the driver seat and as the garage door was closing, he opened the driver’s door and fled out under the closing garage door," according to a prepared statement from police. Maldonado, who fled from the jail barefoot and in handcuffs, had reportedly been arrested earlier in Portage on several charges. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and sweatpants, no shoes and was handcuffed. He is 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen in the area of Pratt Industries. Maldonado was facing initial charges of resisting law enforcement, resisting with injury and possession of a hypodermic needle. Details of his initial arrest weren't immediately available. Officers with Porter County, Lake County Sheriff's Department helicopter unit, Valparaiso and Portage police have been involved in the search. If Maldonado is spotted, people are asked to call Porter County dispatch at 911.  · |
