Fresno Officer Shoots Armed Man in Alley After Family Disturbance
On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, shortly before 7:00 p.m., Fresno police received reports of a gunshot in the alley parallel to the 2600 block of North Fresno Street. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported hearing a shot and screaming from a group in the alley. A family disturbance had escalated, and one family member shot another. One family member told dispatch that her son had been shot by her son-in-law. When officers arrived, they contacted the gunshot victim, whose face, neck, and chest were covered in blood. Officers were told the suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Richard Castrillo, was farther down the alley and still had a gun. Officers approached Mr. Castrillo and saw him struggling on the ground with another man while a woman stood next to them. The man was later identified as the gunshot victim's father, and the woman was later identified as the gunshot victim's sister. An officer told them to "move out of the way" multiple times, and they complied. The officer told Mr. Castrillo to "drop the gun," which he was holding in his right hand. Mr. Castrillo raised the gun and pointed it at officers and other bystanders in the alley. The officer fired his service weapon, striking Mr. Castrillo. Officers removed the handgun and rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. Mr. Castrillo was taken to the hospital in stable but critical condition. The incident was under investigation, with findings to be handed over to the Fresno County District Attorney's Office, Internal Affairs, and the Office of Independent Review.
