On April 5, 2021, at about 3:00 p.m., Franklin Township police officers responded as mutual aid to a motor vehicle accident involving Roy K. Jackel, Jr., 41, of Wildwood Crest, near Cumberland Road and Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista, New Jersey.

During the investigation, Jackel ran from the scene into a wooded area. He later returned, entered an unoccupied marked police vehicle, and drove away. After a brief pursuit, Jackel stopped the stolen police vehicle.

Jackel got out and ran toward officers while holding his arm behind his back and ignoring commands to show his hands. As he neared the officers near Cumberland Avenue and Oak Road, Sgt. David Jernegen fired his service weapon and struck him.

Officers provided medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Jackel was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:11 p.m. The incident remained under investigation, with the case to be presented to a grand jury when the investigation is complete.
