Re: FLORIDA: Deputy Shoots Driver While Hanging from Moving Suspect Vehicle
Good question. The Taser has no power settings, other than on and off. When deployed, it creates a peak of 50k volts. When used for direct contact, the Taser energy does not disperse throughout the body the same as when the darts are used. The shock is isolated to the immediate region of contact. It hurts like hell on the skin surface, but in a very small area. Similar to getting a static shock from touching a metal object while wearing wool, just longer. It's a pain compliance tool, but the strong willed, desperate, crazy and/or drugged up people will tolerate it. When the darts are deployed correctly, they are intended to penetrate the surface of the skin of the upper torso approx. 12-18 inches apart to create a circuit. The path of the energy travels through the torso and effects the central nervous system resulting in involuntary muscle paralysis and painful spasms. It works on everyone, 100%. The problem is, 40% of dart deployments fail due to variable reasons, mostly bulky clothing or other incorrect use scenarios. If one or both darts fail to penetrate or touch the skin, the circuit is incomplete and has no effect. |
