Erratic Driver Arrested After Police Shoots a Tyre in Fort Lauderdale

Quote:
An erratic driver ended up in handcuffs after joyriding in circles and cruising onto a sidewalk at the edge of a block party Sunday evening in the Himmarshee Arts District.

Sheldon Alexander Adderley, 36, is facing three charges — aggravated assault on an officer, resisting an officer and reckless driving — for the 6:15 p.m. incident.

Despite the crowd gathered for a Pride Fort Lauderdale closing party and a police officer firing a shot at one of Adderley's tires, no one was injured other than Adderley. He was hospitalized for treatment after running from cops, stumbling and falling face first on the street.

"It is confirmed that this incident involved the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and that one of our officers discharged their firearm," Detective Tracy Figone said by email Monday morning. "This incident is an opened [internal affairs] investigation and no further information will be available at this time."

The Pompano Beach man's bizarre arrest was captured on cellphone video by a barback at the nearby Cyn Nightclub which was quickly posted to YouTube.

In the video, a dark green Volkswagen can be seen driving back and forth across the railroad tracks in the 100 block of Southwest 2nd Street and turning a circle near where the street was barricaded for the party.

Then it headed west toward Andrews Avenue, made a U-turn near the intersection and returned for another go-round.

Flummoxed cops can be seen sidestepping the vehicle and heard yelling commands to stop.

Adderley operated his 2001 Volkswagen "in a willful disregard for the safety of a crowd of people gathered for a festival on a closed street," an arrest report said.

"The defendant would drive away and then drive at Ofc. Norvis causing Ofc. Norvis to get out of the way or be hit by the car," the report said.

Before all that, Adderley was acting strangely, said Maged Mofid, 24, who recorded the video.

"He sat down on the trunk and he was talking loudly, like he was angry," Mofid said Monday. "I couldn't even understand him. Nobody could."

Police asked Adderley to move, Mofid said, and that's when Adderley got into his car and continued his erratic behavior from behind the wheel.

"He drove in circles, left and came back, like around five times, back and forth," Mofid said.

On the video you hear police officers ordering him to stop and warning people to get back.

As the Volkswagen headed straight for a busy corner, it slowly drove up onto the sidewalk toward the entrance of the Himmarshee Public House restaurant. The sound of an officer firing a shot rang out. The hiss of a deflating tire followed along with an officer's shout of "Get out! Get out now!"

Adderley next made a run for it. He dashed out of the car, dodged and faked out a cop who grabbed Adderley's shirt before falling prone on the ground.

Adderley continued to run, stumbled and fell face first. Three officers converged and handcuffed him, the video shows.

What a dumbass! He could have just drove off and not come back, I guess he wasn't invited to the block party.

Should have worn a belt. Keeps the pants up and makes it easier to run. Of course, we wouldn't have had the pleasure of watching him fall on his face and get tackled by a cop then.

Stupidity has no bounds. Dumbass seems a bit lite to describe his antics.
