Albuquerque police shot and killed Desiree Danielle Herrera, 36, outside Hotel Parq Central in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 17, 2025. Police said Herrera took a security guard's gun and fired from the hotel's exterior staircase before three officers returned fire. She died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Police were called around 4:30 a.m. after hotel staff reported that Herrera was breaking computers and glass. Police said she fired into an SUV window, then fired eight shots from the staircase over about a minute as officers ordered her to surrender. She subsequently fired toward a car near officers, police said. Hotel surveillance footage shows a confrontation at the lobby desk, Herrera beside an SUV and her later position on the exterior stairs.

Police Chief Harold Medina said Herrera was experiencing a mental health crisis and had been sent for an evaluation hours earlier. He said police were examining how she traveled from the hospital to the hotel. The Multi-Agency Task Force opened an investigation, and the officers involved were placed on leave.

Mental health crisis, the new plague.

Desiree Danielle Herrera, 36, passed away on June 17, 2025 in Albuquerque, New Mexico Born on January 28, 1989, in the same city she called home throughout her life.

Desiree brought warmth and light to those around her with her loving spirit and generous heart. Desiree was known for her sweet nature, infectious laughter and deep consideration for others.

Her kindness touched many lives, and she carried a joyful presence that uplifted those fortunate enough to know her. She had a giving soul and heart full of compassion.

Her faith was a guiding force in her life. Legacy Church was her spiritual home, where she found strength and purpose.

Recently, she had begun serving in the water baptism ministry- a role she embraced with devotion and humility.

Desiree loved the Lord deeply, she spoke to him often and sought to serve him in all that she did.

Desiree leaves behind a large and loving family who will cherish her memory forever.
