Dallas Officer Shoots U-Haul Suspect on Lemmon Avenue
On July 25, 2023, at about 11 a.m., Dallas Police Northwest covert and crime response team officers were watching a stolen U-Haul truck in the 9600 block of El Centro Drive. Officers saw 41-year-old Ryan Taylor get into the truck and drive away, and covert officers called marked patrol officers to make a felony stop. While stopped at Dun Haven and LNL Place, Taylor backed into an occupied covert vehicle, deploying its airbags and pushing it into a fire hydrant. Uniformed officers tried to stop him, but he sped away on side streets, hit several vehicles, got onto the Dallas North Tollway, and hit more cars. Taylor exited the tollway and drove to the 7200 block of Lemmon Avenue, where he hit more vehicles in the northbound lanes, crossed the center median, and hit a tree. He left the truck and ran toward a private hangar building. Officer Keenan Craven and other officers chased him. Taylor ran into an opening of the building and fired a handgun at least twice at Craven. Craven returned fire and hit Taylor in the leg. Officers took Taylor into custody inside the building. Dallas Fire Rescue took him to a hospital for treatment. Taylor's handgun was recovered at the scene and had also been reported stolen. No officers were injured, and no serious injuries were reported from the crashes. Taylor would be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault public servant, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and evading arrest in a vehicle.
