RALEIGH, The North Carolina Highway Patrol is reminding drivers about the state's "Move Over" law after a really close call for a state trooper.
Trooper A. G. Knight had a woman stopped on the side of US 64 in Wake County on Aug. 7 when a semi tractor-trailer locked up its brakes in the lane closest to him and came sliding towards him.
Luckily for Knight, the big rig jackknifed towards the median, and not towards him. The whole episode was captured by the trooper's dash camera in his squad car.
North Carolina's Move Over law directs motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing stopped emergency or public service vehicles that have flashing lights.
The penalty for violating the law is a $250 fine plus court costs.
The Highway Patrol says the tractor-trailer's driver was issued a citation.
Since 1999, they say more than 160 officers nationwide have been hit and killed on highways.
