CHICAGO — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has released bodycam video tied to an officer-involved shooting at a Northwest Side police station in July 2020.

Three officers and the offender were shot in the incident, prompting COPA’s involvement.

On July 30, 2020, Chicago Police officers arrested 25-year-old L.J in connection with a carjacking downtown.

After patting down a handcuffed ‘J,’ police found he was carrying drugs in his pocket. Officers did not notice that ‘J’ was carrying a small loaded pistol.

Police transported L.J to the 25th District Station. When an officer went to open the door at the police station, ‘J’ opened fire.

The officer falls to the ground then rises about two minutes later and fires about two shots before running into the station.
Four officers fired shots at L.J, who eventually fell to the ground, left paralyzed by a gunshot wound.

‘J’ had fired at least five shots, striking an officer in the shoulder and neck, prosecutors said. Two other officers suffered less serious wounds: One was shot in his protective vest, but the bullet didn't penetrate; the other officer was wounded in the hip.

In the video, one officer says, “I know you’re shot, I know you’re shot.”

In April, ‘J’ pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and five counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer. A Cook County judge sentenced ‘J’ to 31 years in prison.

L.J was left paralyzed after the shooting but COPA reports that L.J has since died.

I wouldnt have blamed the cops for shooting this guy until his skull just up and collapsed, but the fact that they stopped once they felt he had been neutralized, WITHOUT going into overkill, is worth noting. Good job fellas
