Charles McGonegal II, 69, Shot Dead by Manteca Police at In-N-Out, 2025

Manteca police shot Charles Craig McGonegal II, 69, after his van repeatedly rammed marked patrol vehicles at an In-N-Out Burger parking lot on April 30, 2025.

Officers responded shortly after 5 p.m. to a disturbance in the drive-thru at the restaurant at 1490 E. Yosemite Ave. Police said the white van rammed a patrol vehicle when officers arrived. Officers spent about 20 minutes attempting to de-escalate the encounter before the van accelerated and rammed at least two more marked units, police said. Five officers opened fire, and reports put the number of rounds at more than two dozen.

McGonegal was taken to a hospital and died. No weapon was reported. The California Department of Justice said the van itself was used as the deadly weapon. The Manteca Police Department later released McGonegal's identification. The case was forwarded to the San Joaquin County District Attorney for a decision on whether the shooting was justified.

The suspect, identified by witnesses as Charles McGonegal II, 69 died. Authorities have not released the suspect’s motives or confirmed whether he was armed. Officers discharged an estimated 30 to 40 rounds.

I found on FB: He has mental issues and when he doesn’t have his meds he trips out. His thing is snakes, he sees them everywhere.

In-n-out employee said they saw a open beer in his car after they served him in the drive-thru. Supposedly he was ramming other cars in the parking lot. Police were trying to calm him down and talk to him for at least 20 minutes. He rammed a total of 3 police cars. The last police he rammed was where the video picks up from.
