IRVINE, (August 5, 2024) — A former caregiver stabbed a paralyzed man to death after crashing a minivan into his home.

The suspect, 47-year-old Aaron Matthew Shindle, was then killed by police, after an encounter less than half a mile away from the victim's Woodbridge home in California.

The incident happened Monday morning at about 2:15 am, the Irvine Police Department said, revealing how officers were forced to shoot Shindle after he attempted to accost them with the same knife used to kill John Alexander Bash.

Bash, 38, had been a former client of Shindle's, they went on to reveal - before stating it was the wheelchair-bound man's current caretaker who discovered his savaged body.

He went on to dial 911, after discovering his patient was bloody and unresponsive. When IPD arrived, they found an unoccupied Honda minivan crashed into his garage door, and Bash dead inside.

A shootout minutes later saw Shindle killed, they said - after the suspect raised the still-bloodied weapon at them.

Prior to his accident, Bash worked as a loan officer, then pivoted to become the CEO of Destination Vacation, a vacation home rental company, and vice president of Calimingo Pools, a luxury pool and outdoor space company, according to the Stidhams and his LinkedIn profile.

A neighbor who lives across the street in Woodbridge said she heard helicopters circling the area on Monday shortly after the attack. The woman, who declined to be named, recalled Bash as kind, and that he was active before his accident.

Every morning, she said, she would see Bash in his wheelchair, taking his companion dog for a walk.

The golden Labrador retriever was placed with a family member, police said.


Bash’s brother said in August that Schindle — who had lived in Tampa, Florida, but in recent times was nomadic — quit the job as caretaker in 2021 to enter rehabilitation for methamphetamine use.
