Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, 22, was shot in the head at close range on June 17, 2025, on the pavement outside Imenti House in central Nairobi. Protests were underway over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang in police custody at Nairobi Central Police Station.

Kariuki was selling face masks near the demonstrators, and witnesses said he was not taking part in the protest. Two officers approached him, and one shot him while he was still holding a packet of masks. Kariuki survived the shooting and underwent brain surgery, but he died 13 days later on June 30. A public postmortem found that he died from a severe head injury caused by a single close-range gunshot. Four projectile fragments remained lodged in his brain, while two others had been removed during surgery.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority investigated the shooting and forwarded its file to prosecutors. Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Baraza has been charged with Kariuki's murder and pleaded not guilty at Milimani High Court. He was denied bail and remains in custody. The case has not yet been tried, and there has been no verdict.

The man survived, according to a spokesperson at the Nairobi hospital where he and several others hurt during the protest were taken. A senior health ministry official, Patrick Amoth, told local media later Tuesday that the man — still unidentified — was in surgery, with a bed on standby in intensive care.

Later Tuesday, as questions grew about the shooting — “Killer police,” one Nairobi headline read — police expressed concern. In a statement, they said the officer had been arrested. Police did not name him, but outraged Kenyans zoomed in on his uniform.
