On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Aurora Police Department SWAT team was assisting the Denver Police Department Fugitive Unit in Aurora with surveillance of a suspect wanted on an active Denver warrant for attempted first-degree murder.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Denver resident Kylin Aaron Lewis. The warrant stemmed from a May 5, 2024 shooting near East 48th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver, where Lewis was accused of shooting a 63-year-old man multiple times. The victim survived.

Denver and Aurora fugitive teams learned Lewis had visited an apartment complex in the 300 block of South Iron Street in Aurora. Teams watched him over two days, and Aurora SWAT was requested because of the high-risk warrant.

Just before noon, Lewis arrived at the apartment complex in a red Chevy Monte Carlo, parked, and opened the trunk. SWAT officers approached while he was at the rear of the car and gave commands to get on the ground. His hands were visible and empty at first.

Lewis did not get on the ground. He moved toward the driver's side door, put his left hand into his pants pocket, and placed his right hand behind his back out of view. When his right hand came back into view, he was holding an object. Officer Michael Dee fired one shot.

The object was later determined to be a cell phone. SWAT officers provided aid until medical responders arrived. Lewis was taken to a nearby hospital and died on Saturday, May 25, 2024.

Officer Dee was identified as a 12-year veteran of the department who had been assigned to SWAT for more than eight years. He remained on paid administrative leave.
