Aurora Officer Fatally Shoots Armed Man After Crash

On August 30, 2025, at 7:29 p.m., an Aurora officer assigned to the traffic section was conducting speed enforcement on East 6th Avenue as part of a Labor Day DUI operation. The officer was parked near Toledo Street when he saw a vehicle speeding and tried to stop it with lights and siren.

The driver did not immediately pull over. At 7:30 p.m., the vehicle crashed into two uninvolved vehicles at East 6th Avenue and Billing Street.

The officer approached with his gun drawn and ordered the driver to stay in the vehicle with his hands up. The driver got out and tossed a firearm into the grass. The officer grabbed the back of his shirt, leading to a brief struggle in which the officer fell, then got back up and continued ordering him to get on the ground.

Several other people were nearby, including the driver's adult son. The driver gestured toward the area where the firearm had been thrown and was heard saying, "Get that shit," several times. Over the next 60 to 90 seconds, the officer continued giving commands. The driver did not comply, took a fighting stance, and backed the officer into oncoming traffic on East 6th Avenue.

At 7:32 p.m., the officer fired, fatally striking the driver. Additional officers arrived at 7:33 p.m., secured the firearm, and performed life-saving measures, which were unsuccessful.

The man killed was identified as 37-year-old Rajan Belt Stubblefield. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting.
