One of my heroes. He did eventually soften his attitude about hitting women and later said it was NEVER acceptable but I cut him slack because he was old and ineffectual by then and half the real man he used to be. Just watched his old movie THE OFFENSE (1973) about a police inspector in the UK having a particularly horrible nervous breakdown when all the terrible things he saw in his 20 year career finally cause him to crack when he interrogates a loathsome child rapist who gets into his head. It's directed by Sidney Lumet and VERY dark but highly recommended.
