Backpackers who are always on an adventurous but budget-friendly tour in Vietnam must remember these words by heart – nha nghi. Nha nghi means guest house in Vietnamese. These are reasonably priced places to stay in the country, that are less fancy than hotels and more well-kept and decent than motels.

Nha nghi – two words that mean a lot to travelers– can open up many doors to stay in a safe and comfortable place no matter which part of the country you are in. Even if you are on urban streets, hamlet roads, district roads, or national motorways, you will always find a good nha nghi, or guest house, near you.

Some of the nha nghi signs are pretty small and go unnoticed. Many others, on the other hand, indicate that it’s not a guest house but a love hotel instead.

These are often targeted by local police to crack down on prostitution, drugs and child sex workers; wives sometimes confront their husband’s mistresses; and videos and images captured by hidden cameras have been posted to the internet. But these dangers aren’t stopping customers from frequenting nha nghi:
