A past with police

Hinton has had other encounters with law enforcement.
He joined the Marines in 1973, serving part of the time as a military police officer in Okinawa, Japan. Hinton was honorably discharged two years later for a physical disability.

Shortly after being discharged, when he was 22, court records show that he was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor battery in San Diego.

The records show that a court-appointed psychiatrist examined Hinton and found him not mentally competent. He was transferred to Patton State Hospital for treatment. After three months, he was re-examined and declared to have regained his competency to stand trial.

The records only show that a court date was set. Hinton said the charges were dropped.

In 1992, court records show, Hinton was arrested in San Diego and pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine.

Hinton said he was a professional pool player at the time. He said he kicked his drug habit and has been clean for 15 years.

In 2000, he had a disagreement with three San Diego police officers and he sued the Police Department. He alleged that he was treated improperly when the officers investigated whether he called 911 and falsely reported an arson fire. He lost the case in 2004.

Hinton said his past “doesn't have anything to do with the issues at hand.”
